DMYP Grant: Segundo Barrio Outreach
As the year is quickly coming to a close, there are so many more projects I want to share information with you about. Segundo Barrio Outreach is a great example. This is a project in El Paso, Texas and i’ve learned through their reporting that the community there is the poorest urban zip code in the U.S. They’ve begun a Spanish language worship service on Sunday mornings and since partnering with several groups, Sundays have been a success! Other ways the project participants have served the community are: community Health Fair and a food distribution. They distributed 32,000 lbs of free food and provided free health screenings. They conducted a B1 Fast also where 20 youth participated. They will host the Health Fair again March 10, 2012.
Another goal they’ve set is to raise $1,000 for the Imagine No Malaria campaign. About midway through this year, the focus shifted to a more ministerial and leadership training for the young people in the Segundo Barrio community. Internships in local churches are a big part; also a two-month “theological Spanish” course for a few mission teams. And they have placed a priority on Lay Ministry programs! What are they not doing is the question?!
The Rio Grande Conference has sponsored the new Sunday Worship services. Initial attendance was over 200 worshipers. As of now, the Segundo Barrio project, as a whole has over 100 youth in ministry. The impact locally is even greater. The Lay Ministers are making a huge difference, not only in El Paso but throughout their whole Jurisdiction!
