Are you a young adult (age 18-30) who enjoys writing? Do you keep a blog? Are you interested in helping people your age explore issues of faith, life, and young adulthood?

If you can answer yes to any of these questions then we would love to have you write devotions for this website. Devotion writers get the opportunity to write four short posts for the website on a variety of subjects. These short devotions are a great way to get your writing out there while at the same helping to get your fellow young adults thinking. Even greater, we are able to offer a small stipend for writers who have their work accepted.

If you are interested in taking part in this program, send email John for more information. Also, feel free to let other young adults who are interested in writing know about this program.

In just a few days, the United Methodist Church will begin its General Conference. For those who are unaware of event, representatives from around the world will engage in “Holy Conferencing” and listen to where God is calling the missions and ministries of the United Methodist Church. Everything from the contents of the Social Principles, to the structure of the church, to the shape of the Church’s ministry with young people will be discussed. Because this is conference concerns the direction of a twelve million member denomination, it can be a little overwhelming to follow everything that is going on. That’s why we’re here to help you follow along with this important General Conference.

First off, for general information on the conference visit the General Conference website. From there you can find information about what is happening at General Conference and follow legislation. The site has explanations about what General Conference is and how it works. It also has ways to be involved in general conference from afar by taking part in the 50 Days of Prayer initiative from the Upper Room. If you’re looking a more minute-by-minute account of the proceedings, follow GC2012 on Twitter or Facebook. More social networking and RSS feeds for the different general agencies can also be found at the General Conference website.

If you are on the go, or want a way to organize all of the information about General Conerence in one convenient place, check out the Official General Conference 2012 app. With it, you can view streaming video of conference sessions, photos and videos from the event, and track specific legislation as it works its way through the conference. The app is available for both iOS devices and Android phones in their respective marketplaces.

Lastly, if you really want to get into the nitty-gritty of the legislation for General Conference, the best place to look is the Advance Edition Daily Christian Advocate. There you can see each piece of proposed legislation, what body or person proposed it, and follow it through the session.

As the United Methoist Church prayerfully considers the direction that God is calling it for the future, these tips will help you stay up to date. Enjoy, and feel free to share with others.

Happy Earth Day! While not a specifically Christian holiday, Earth Day gives us, as Christians, the chance to deepen our connection with God as revealed through creation. Here are a few tips about how you and the young people in your congregation can deepen your love for God and neighbor by taking respecting God’s creative work.

First, familiarize yourself on United Methodist theology concerning the environment. As green initiatives have become more and more political polarizing, it’s import to be aware of the theology behind creation care. While a great starting point for theology on the subject can be found in the social principles of the Book of Discipline. A greatsummary of UM positions on the environment has been put together by the General Board of Church and Society. For a more thorough exploration of the theology of creation care, you can also read Hope and Action: God’s Renewed Creation, a pastoral letter released by the Council of Bishops in 2009 addressing threats to God’s creation.

Second, take part in efforts to green your own behavior and the behavior of your congregation. A great starting point are two books by Rebekah Simon-Peter, an ordained United Methodist pastor with a degree in Environmental Studies, called Green Church and Seven Simple Ways to Green Your Church. If you’d like to take action to see the environmental impact of your church (and find some ways to save some money!), visit Hopeandaction.org’s environmental impact page, the official page for the aforementioned bishops’ pastoral letter. For ways to get your church involved in community action on the environment, visit the National Council of Churches eco-justice program. You can also find an extensive catalogue of resources there. If you want to involve your congregation in specific acts of worship for Earth Day, go to the GBOD Worship Page for some ideas.

Lastly, help your young people directly experience creation. Lifelong Methodists are likely aware of the Wesleyan Quadrilateral. The quadrilateral is a four-faceted system telling us how we can experience God through scripture, reason, tradition and experience. The last aspect of the quadrilateral explains that we can experience God in the created order. So get out there with your young people and experience the beauty of God’s creation! Visit a national park, go on a hike or walk, or find other ways to enjoy the warm weather in most of the country. You can even find ways to experience God through creation by eating. Visit a local farm, find out how God provides for us through the harvest, and eat some great food.

Earth Day reminds us of the grandeur of God’s creation. God has created the world around us so that we may come into relationship with the Father and the Son. Help the young people that you are in ministry with to experience that relationship.
