For many of us, we don’t have to go somewhere to use a computer because we have at least one in our home. The situation is a little different for this group of people in the DRC. A group of students run this computer centre and use it to help empower poor people and teach them how to become self-sufficient. Since receiving the funds, they’ve approached two schools to provide them with computer and information technology training. The group was also able to purchase three refurbished computers to use for the training.
Update: 11/15/2011
This past week I emailed our friends working with the Hope Computer Center. I was able what’s been going on with the program lately. So, just to make this a little more personal, I’ll share with you what the email said. Read below:
The students are doing well. We are just at the beginning of the basics notions about the website and domain names and how to register a domain name. We are not advanced on websites building. We are working on the important topics as you know…Thank you for what we were able to get so that other organizations can have also.
One of my favorite parts about this email is the last line my friend Michel writes. They received much less than they requested but are still making the most of the situation and working with an attitude of gratefulness. It was actually a somewhat convicting post too. Personally, I know how much more I have than others and I completely take advantage of it at times. I’m thankful for our friends working with the Hope Computer Center because of the classes they are offering in the DRC but also for what they are teaching me through their attitudes.
Just wanted to offer a little update to you!
