*Of Coffee and College Graduations*
Kuh, a friend and classmate from College, set down her half-empty coffee on the table between us. I looked at her and said, “if I only knew the stuff I know now right when I started working, I would have maximized my PAG-IBIG fund and got myself a house!”
She nodded and said “yeah, sayang no? Hindi kasi tinuturo sa university ang mga practical life skills.”
Kuh and I were catching up with each other on our lives, in her case, in law school. We couldn’t help but look back at our lives after College. We have gone farther than when we started out. But somehow, not as far as we would have wanted after college.
We usually spend four to five years in College. Yung iba mas mahaba pa: may Magna at Suma! MAGNA-nine years at SUMA-sampung taon na! We learn the intricacies of language. We calculate solutions to Math problems, may kasama pang kamot sa ulo. We bury our heads among so many books in the library, minsan nakakatulog pa nga! We spend sleepless nights writing term papers while drinking gallons of coffee, reviewing for exams and (gasp!) we miss our favorite TV shows and hanging out with friends in our favorite tambayans.
Yet, the pains of studying pay off when graduation comes! During my last semester at the University, I had five major subjects! Imagine that! Akala ko ‘di na ko makaka-graduate on time. I even contemplated filing a leave of absence half-way through the semester! But thankfully, I made it!
That’s why, unlike my batch mates, I decided to attend the University graduation on top of our College recognition rites. Bakit?! Eto yung pagkakataon ko na maramdaman na aalis na ko sa University for good!
